Durham Police Report Increased Impaired Driving Charges in Festive RIDE Program
The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has reported the results of the first week of their 2024 Festive RIDE program. During this period, over 2,600 vehicles were stopped, resulting in 16 drivers being charged with impaired driving offenses. The RIDE checks were conducted across the Durham Region, including Clarington.
Key statistics from the first week include:
- 2,606 vehicles stopped
- 60 roadside breath tests administered
- 10 drivers received a 3-day suspension for a 'WARN' result
- 16 individuals charged with drinking and driving offenses
- 22 impaired/refuse/exceed charges laid
- 3 other Criminal Code charges
- 184 Highway Traffic Act offenses
- 6 drug offenses
The DRPS collaborated with the Durham Region Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) during the checks. MADD volunteers, including survivors and those personally impacted by impaired driving, participated to thank sober drivers and raise awareness about the consequences of impaired driving.
The DRPS noted a 23% increase in impaired drivers compared to the same period last year. They urge the community to plan for sober transportation options and report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
