Durham Police Report First Weekend Results of Summer R.I.D.E. Program

Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) reported the outcomes of the first weekend of the Summer R.I.D.E. (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program. The initiative aimed at enhancing roadway safety resulted in the following statistics:

  • Vehicles Stopped: 1,379
  • Roadside Breath Tests Conducted: 25
  • 3-Day Suspensions Issued: 2 (for registering a "WARN")
  • Impaired Driving Charges Laid: 7
  • Other Criminal Code Charges: 14

The R.I.D.E. checks were conducted throughout the Region of Durham, and officers responded to four accidents involving impaired drivers. Volunteers from MADD Durham participated in the program, assisting in educating drivers about the risks associated with impaired driving. DRPS noted that while most motorists complied with traffic regulations, some drivers remained unaware of the dangers posed by impaired driving. The program will continue to focus on roadway safety and impaired driving prevention.
