Durham Police Officer Charged with Failing to Provide Medical Assistance
A Durham Regional Police Service officer has been charged with Failing to Provide the Necessaries of Life. The charge was brought by the DRPS Professional Standards Unit. The incident in question occurred in March 2024 when the officer allegedly did not provide medical assistance to a person in distress during a call for service. The individual was later taken to a hospital by a family member and subsequently released.
The officer, identified as Constable James Wright, has served with the DRPS for 23 years. Following an internal review of the call, an investigation was initiated, leading to the charge. Constable Wright has been released on an undertaking and is currently suspended from duty with pay.
The allegations against Constable Wright have not yet been proven in court.
