Durham Police Conduct Over 3,500 Vehicle Stops in Festive RIDE Initiative

The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has reported the results of the fourth week of its 2024 Festive RIDE program, an initiative designed to reduce impaired driving during the holiday season. According to the DRPS, officers conducted stops on over 3,500 vehicles across the Durham Region, which includes Clarington.

During these stops, 16 drivers were charged with impaired driving offences. The Festive RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) program is a recurring effort by the DRPS to enhance road safety during a time when alcohol consumption is typically higher due to holiday celebrations.

The program involves setting up checkpoints at various undisclosed locations to ensure drivers are adhering to safe driving practices. The DRPS has emphasized the importance of this initiative in maintaining public safety, although specific details about the program's broader impact are not provided in the release.

In addition to the impaired driving charges, the DRPS issued several warnings and charges for other traffic-related offences. These efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy to promote responsible driving behavior throughout the community.

The Festive RIDE program will continue throughout the holiday season, with the DRPS maintaining a visible presence on the roads. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead and use alternative transportation options if they intend to consume alcohol.
