Durham College Launches Electric Vehicle Technician Program
Durham College in Whitby, Ontario, has introduced a new Electric Drive Vehicle Technician (EDVT) program. This program is one of only two available in Ontario and aims to prepare students for careers in the electric and hybrid vehicle sector. The program is designed to address the growing demand for skilled technicians in the automotive industry, which is increasingly focusing on electric and hybrid technologies.
The EDVT program will be conducted at the Vanhaverbeke Family EV Training Centre, where students will gain hands-on experience with electric and hybrid vehicle systems. The curriculum includes training in high-voltage electrical systems, electric drivetrains, and battery management. Students will also complete a 56-hour capstone project to integrate their learning.
Dr. Rebecca Milburn, Executive Dean at Durham College, stated that the program combines traditional mechanical skills with specialized knowledge for electric vehicles. The program is set to begin in September 2025, and applications are currently being accepted.
