DRPS Reports 21 Impaired Driving Charges in Festive RIDE Program
The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) has released the results from the fifth week of its 2024 Festive RIDE program. During this period, officers stopped a total of 2,323 vehicles and charged 21 drivers with impaired driving offences. Additionally, 218 drivers were subjected to roadside breath tests.
The Festive RIDE program, which stands for Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere, is an initiative designed to reduce incidents of impaired driving throughout the region. This week, the DRPS worked alongside Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Durham and auxiliary constables to extend the program's reach.
Comparatively, the number of vehicles stopped this week increased from 1,973 in the same week last year. The number of roadside breath tests conducted also rose significantly, with 218 tests administered compared to 61 in the previous year. Over the first five weeks of the program, 86 impaired driving charges have been laid, nearly matching the total for the entire six-week campaign in 2023.
The DRPS encourages residents to report any suspected impaired drivers by calling 911, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in maintaining road safety. The police service also advises drivers to plan ahead by arranging for alternative transportation or designating a sober driver.
