Delegation by Larry Dickinson on Affordable Housing and Tax Reduction Request

Larry Dickinson, Chair of The Durham County Senior Citizens Lodge, addressed the General Government Committee on June 3, 2024, regarding a request to reduce municipal taxes. Dickinson provided an overview of the Lodge, highlighting that their operational costs include garbage collection, snow removal, septic services, and general maintenance. He noted that the facility, which is over 50 years old, requires significant upgrades. To generate additional funds, the Lodge rents out meeting rooms, but their grant requests have not been successful. Dickinson emphasized the need to reduce monthly expenses and formally requested a reduction in municipal taxes to allocate the saved funds towards necessary upgrades and expenses. The committee subsequently passed a resolution to receive his delegation with thanks and requested staff to engage with Durham Region for support for non-profit organizations.
