Contract for River-Class Destroyers Awaits for Canadian Navy
The Canadian government has awarded a contract to Irving Shipbuilding Inc. for constructing a new series of River-class destroyers for the Royal Canadian Navy. This announcement was made by the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence, along with the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, and the Honourable Darren Fisher, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence.
These new River-class destroyers are intended to enhance the capabilities of the Canadian naval fleet, replacing the retired Iroquois-class destroyers and the Halifax-class frigates. Designed with up-to-date sonar, radar systems, and weaponry, the ships are based on the BAE Systems’ Type 26 warship design, which is used by the United Kingdom and Australia as well.
