Competition Bureau Files Lawsuit Against Rogers Over Data Claims

The Competition Bureau has filed a lawsuit against Rogers Communications Inc., alleging that the company has engaged in misleading advertising practices related to its Infinite wireless phone plans. According to the Bureau, these plans are promoted as offering unlimited data, but they actually impose data caps. Once these caps are reached, the data speeds are reportedly reduced by over 99%, which the Bureau claims creates a misleading impression of unlimited data availability.

The Bureau has submitted an application to the Competition Tribunal, seeking to stop the allegedly misleading advertising practices. Additionally, the Bureau is pursuing a financial penalty against Rogers and is advocating for restitution to be provided to affected customers.

Matthew Boswell, the Commissioner of Competition, stated, "Canadians need accurate and truthful information when purchasing goods and services, especially essential services like wireless data plans. This case demonstrates that the Bureau remains committed to ensuring that Canadian consumers are not misled."

Rogers Communications Inc., headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, is one of Canada's largest telecommunications companies. The legal action is part of the Competition Bureau's efforts to ensure fair marketing practices across the industry. The Bureau, based in Gatineau, Quebec, has previously taken similar actions against other companies to protect consumer interests.

The outcome of this legal action could have significant implications for Rogers and its customers, particularly those who have purchased the Infinite plans under the impression of having unlimited data access.
