Cobourg Harbour to Undergo $19.5 Million Redevelopment for Climate Resilience
The federal government, in partnership with the Town of Cobourg, has allocated $19.5 million for the project of rebuilding Cobourg Harbour's breakwaters and Monk’s Cove Park seawall on Lake Ontario. This investment is facilitated through the Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund aimed at enhancing shoreline safety and resilience to climate change challenges, such as erosion and flooding.
The project includes the removal of the existing concrete cap from the breakwaters, followed by the installment of limestone below the water and granite above it. Monk’s Cove Park seawall will be reinforced with a double-layer structure. The initiative prioritizes using locally sourced materials within a 100 km radius to minimize environmental impact and plans to repurpose old stones where possible.
Cobourg Harbour serves crucial roles such as maintaining local infrastructure and providing a base for the Canadian Coast Guard. The focus of this project remains strictly on improving these capacities and ensuring long-term resilience against climate-related threats without extending to broader economic claims.
