CNSC Update by Ramzi Jammal at Clarington General Government Committee
Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), provided an update during the General Government Committee meeting on November 25, 2019. Jammal highlighted the CNSC's mandate and priorities, stating that the headquarters are located in Ottawa, with four site offices at power plants, one at Chalk River, and four regional offices. He noted that Canada has five Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) sites and five Waste Management Facilities (WMF). Jammal discussed the annual performance report summarizing the CNSC’s Compliance Verification Program, and provided updates on the Darlington and Pickering sites. He emphasized that health and environmental impacts are of utmost importance to the CNSC, confirming that data indicates the health of Canadians is protected. Jammal mentioned that the international evaluation mission (EPREV) in 2019 concluded that Canada has a well-developed and mature Emergency Preparedness and Response system across all levels of government. He also discussed the Potassium Iodide (KI) Pill Working Group's two-phase approach, the CNSC's oversight of waste management from NPPs, and the decommissioning planning of NPPs. Jammal noted that the CNSC is reviewing various reactor designs and supports public and Indigenous involvement in all processes. The Committee received his presentation with thanks.
