Clarington Secures Grant for Emissions Reduction Study
The Municipality of Clarington has been awarded a grant of $166,080 from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Green Municipal Fund. This funding is designated for a feasibility study aimed at identifying strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from municipal buildings. The study will explore measures such as upgrading lighting to energy-efficient LEDs and improving HVAC systems. The objective is to achieve a reduction in emissions by at least 50% within ten years and 80% within twenty years.
Mayor Adrian Foster expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the municipality's commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative is part of Clarington's broader Corporate Climate Action Plan, which includes 115 actions to address climate change impacts and aims for net-zero emissions by 2050.
The Green Municipal Fund, managed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, provides resources to municipalities for projects that aim to reach net-zero emissions and enhance community resilience. Since its inception, the fund has contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2.9 million tonnes and supported over 30,000 sustainable housing units across Canada.
