Clarington Residents Advised on Bear Safety as Hibernation Ends
The Ontario government and the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are advising Clarington residents to stay alert as black bears are awakening from hibernation. As spring arrives, bears emerge seeking food, increasing the possibility of encounters with humans.
To help residents minimize the likelihood of these encounters, the government and OPP recommend securing trash bins, keeping pet food indoors, and removing bird feeders. Residents are also encouraged to clean barbecue grills thoroughly after use.
"Eliminating easy food sources is crucial in preventing bear encounters," stated a government representative.
In the event of a bear encounter, it is advised to remain calm and back away slowly, ensuring not to turn your back on the bear. If a bear poses an immediate danger, residents should contact local authorities or call 911 for assistance.
