Clarington Requests Provincial Review of MFIPPA
On February 5, 2024, the General Government Committee of Clarington passed a resolution requesting the Ministry of Public and Business Service Delivery to review and modernize the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). This request was initiated by Mayor Foster and seconded by Councillor Traill. The resolution highlighted that MFIPPA has not undergone a comprehensive review in over 30 years, which presents challenges for municipal staff in delivering effective services. The committee emphasized the need for updated legislation that supports local program delivery, enhances transparency, and addresses the demands of the digital age. The Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO) has provided recommendations for modernizing MFIPPA in their submission titled 'Looking Ahead: A Proactive Submission to Modernize the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.' The resolution was carried with unanimous support from all committee members present.
