Clarington Receives Safety Alarms Donation from Enbridge Gas

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services has received a donation of 342 combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms from Enbridge Gas. This donation is part of the Safe Community Project Zero, an initiative by Enbridge Gas in collaboration with the Fire Marshal’s Public Fire Safety Council. The project aims to distribute alarms to areas in need across Ontario to help reduce fire and carbon monoxide-related incidents.

The alarms will be distributed within the Clarington community, focusing on high-risk areas. Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster expressed gratitude for the donation, highlighting the importance of the initiative in enhancing community safety.

Nick Eng, Operations Supervisor for Enbridge Gas in GTA East, emphasized the role of these alarms as a secondary defense against carbon monoxide poisoning, which is a by-product of incomplete combustion of fuels. The alarms are intended to provide early warnings to residents, allowing them to evacuate safely in the event of a fire or carbon monoxide exposure.

John McBeth, Acting Ontario Fire Marshal, noted the program's role in educating communities about the necessity of having working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in homes, especially those with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages.

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services encourages residents to regularly test their alarms, replace batteries as needed, and ensure alarms are within their expiration dates. More safety tips can be found on the Clarington municipal website.
