Clarington Mayor Comments on Provincial Energy Initiative

Clarington Mayor Adrian Foster has commented on the recent announcement by the provincial government regarding new energy initiatives. The government has tasked Ontario Power Generation with developing new power generation projects in the province. Mayor Foster expressed support for the initiative, highlighting the importance of the clean energy sector to the local community.

The announcement is part of a broader provincial strategy to enhance energy production capabilities. The plan includes measures to ensure that new projects receive municipal support and consent, particularly in communities that are directly affected. This approach aims to balance energy development with local interests and environmental considerations.

The provincial government has outlined several key points in its energy strategy:

  • Developers must obtain municipal support resolutions for new projects.

  • Projects are prohibited in specialty crop areas and prime agricultural lands to prevent solar farms.

  • Incentives are provided for projects in northern Ontario and those avoiding prime agricultural areas.

  • Economic opportunities are encouraged for projects involving Indigenous communities on their traditional territories.

  • Agricultural Impact Assessments are required for projects in prime agricultural areas.

These measures are part of the Second Long-Term Procurement (LT2) plan, which seeks to address growing energy demands while protecting agricultural lands. The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) is tasked with ensuring that the procurement process is transparent and competitive, focusing on securing diverse energy resources, including wind and solar.

The provincial government has emphasized the need for a rapid response to meet increasing energy demands, with the IESO expected to report back with a procurement design framework by September 2024. The goal is to conclude energy and capacity procurements by February 2026, supporting large-scale investments and job creation across Ontario.
