Clarington Library Receives Grant for Seniors' Oral History Project

The Clarington Library, Museums & Archives (CLMA) has received a Seniors Community Grant for the project “Golden Tales: Chronicles of our Community.” The grant, amounting to up to $17,000, was announced at the Courtice Community Complex on June 25, 2024.

The “Golden Tales” project aims to document and share the stories and portraits of seniors who have settled in or were born in Clarington. The project will include interviews and events with older adults, focusing on their histories and contributions to the community. The initiative will also educate seniors on how to digitize and preserve their oral histories using multimedia.

Monika Machacek, Chief Executive Officer, stated that the project will address social isolation among older adults in Clarington, particularly those in rural areas. The project will use mobile outreach and digital solutions to reach seniors, record their stories, and share them with the wider community.

The Ontario Seniors Community Grant Program supports local, not-for-profit community groups and organizations in delivering programs and learning opportunities for Ontarians aged 55 and older. The program aims to help seniors live independently, ensure their safety and security, connect them to their community, avoid isolation, and achieve greater financial security and social connections.
