Clarington Emergency and Fire Services has issued guidelines for residents planning to use fireworks during Diwali celebrations. According to the local By-law No. 2015-047, residents must obtain a Fireworks Permit before discharging fireworks, though the permit fee is waived for cultural or religious holidays.
Fireworks Safety Guidelines
- Do not discharge fireworks on municipal property, public parks, or open spaces without a permit.
- Do not use fireworks on highways or roads.
- Do not light fireworks in windy conditions.
- Do not attempt to re-light defective fireworks.
- Do not hold a lit firework in your hand.
Recommended Practices
- Always read instructions before use.
- Use a stable base such as a sand-filled bucket.
- Set up fireworks in a clear, open space away from obstacles.
- Ensure only adults handle fireworks.
- Keep water, sand, or a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Wait 30 minutes before approaching a dud firework and submerge it in water.
- Respect neighbors and community by cleaning up debris.
Sparkler Safety
- Wear protective gloves when handling sparklers.
- Avoid loose clothing that can catch fire.
- Supervise children using sparklers; not suitable for those under five.
- Hold sparklers at arm’s length and light one at a time.
- Place used sparklers in water or sand to cool.
Residents are encouraged to inform neighbors about planned fireworks and be mindful of pets that may be disturbed by the noise. Fireworks should be discharged between dusk and 11 p.m. For more information, residents can visit the Clarington Emergency and Fire Services website.
