Clarington Fire Services Emphasize Carbon Monoxide Safety

Clarington Emergency and Fire Services has issued guidelines on carbon monoxide (CO) safety for residents. Carbon monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas, is produced when fuels do not burn completely in appliances such as stoves, furnaces, and fireplaces. Exposure to CO can lead to serious health issues, including headaches, dizziness, and even death.

Residents are reminded that it is mandatory to install carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas if their home contains a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage. For those living in apartments or condos with fuel-burning appliances, alarms must be placed near sleeping areas, especially if the building has a service room or shares a wall with a parking garage.

During Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week, residents are encouraged to ensure their CO alarms are functioning properly. This includes testing alarms monthly, replacing batteries annually, and checking the device's expiration date. If an alarm sounds, it is crucial to evacuate the premises immediately and contact emergency services by calling 9-1-1 from outside the home.
