Clarington Explores New Taxes for Accommodation and Stormwater Management
The Municipality of Clarington is evaluating the introduction of a Municipal Accommodation Tax and a Stormwater Management Fee, as discussed during the General Government Committee meeting on January 13, 2025.
The proposed Municipal Accommodation Tax would necessitate revenue-sharing agreements and the creation of an enabling by-law. This tax is intended to apply to accommodations within the municipality, potentially affecting businesses in the hospitality sector.
Additionally, the Stormwater Management Fee is slated for implementation by January 1, 2028. This fee is designed to address stormwater infrastructure needs and will require the establishment of necessary agreements and by-laws.
These proposed taxes are expected to generate additional revenue for the municipality. The potential impacts on local businesses and residents are under consideration, with further discussions planned in upcoming meetings to ensure stakeholder engagement and transparency in the process.
