Clarington Declares Unwilling Host for Anaerobic Digestion Facility

On June 22, 2020, Clarington Council voted to declare the municipality an unwilling host for the proposed anaerobic digestion facility on Megawatt Drive. The resolution, moved by Councillor Traill and seconded by Councillor Anderson, passed with a recorded vote of 5 to 2. The council requested that the provincial government place a hold on the proposed site until a full Environmental Assessment (EA) is conducted. Additionally, they asked the Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks to prohibit the Region of Durham from proceeding with the facility until the EA is completed to the satisfaction of Clarington Council. The council members who voted in favor included Mayor Foster, Councillors Anderson, Hooper, Traill, and Zwart, while Councillors Jones and Neal opposed the motion. The council's decision reflects concerns regarding the potential impacts of the facility on the local community and environment.
