Clarington Council Urges Provincial Action on Homelessness and Mental Health
The Municipality of Clarington has formally called on the provincial government to address the growing issues of homelessness and mental health. During the General Government Committee meeting on December 2, 2024, the council supported the Ontario Big City Mayors' campaign, urging immediate action from both provincial and federal governments.
The council highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis, citing over 3,400 drug-related deaths and more than 1,400 homeless encampments across Ontario in 2023. Despite a provincial investment of $378 million for HART Hubs, which includes funding for approximately 375 beds with support services, Clarington officials argue that these measures fall short of addressing the crisis's full scope.
