Clarington Council Seeks Redistribution of Provincial Taxes for Infrastructure
The Clarington Council has submitted a formal request for the redistribution of a portion of the Provincial Land Transfer Tax and Goods and Services Tax (GST) to municipalities. This proposal was discussed during the General Government Committee meeting on December 2, 2024, and aims to secure sustainable funding for local infrastructure projects.
The resolution, introduced by Mayor Foster and supported by Councillor Elhajjeh, emphasizes the increasing infrastructure demands faced by municipalities. These demands include essential services such as roads, bridges, public transit, and water systems, which are vital for community well-being and economic growth. The Council's resolution states, "Whereas municipalities face growing infrastructure needs, including roads, bridges, public transit, water systems, and other critical services, which are essential to community well-being and economic development."
The Council also highlighted that current municipal revenue sources, primarily property taxes and user fees, are inadequate to meet these growing infrastructure investment needs. The resolution calls for additional funding sources to effectively address these challenges.
The resolution will be forwarded to relevant government bodies and other municipalities for consideration, as part of Clarington's broader strategy to secure necessary funding for infrastructure development.
This request reflects a broader concern among municipalities regarding the sufficiency of existing funding mechanisms to support critical infrastructure projects. By seeking a redistribution of provincial taxes, Clarington aims to ensure that local infrastructure needs are met sustainably.
