Clarington Council Requests Removal of Tolls on Highway 407

The General Government Committee of Clarington, during its meeting on March 4, 2024, endorsed a resolution from the Region of Durham requesting the Province of Ontario to permanently remove tolls on the provincially owned portion of Highway 407, specifically between Brock Road in Pickering and Highway 35/115. The resolution states that Highway 407 is currently the only tolled provincially owned highway in Ontario, which could lead to unfair economic impacts on residents and businesses in Durham Region if excluded from proposed legislation banning tolls on all other provincially owned highways. The resolution highlights that the removal of tolls would reduce the cost of living for residents and promote economic growth, ensuring equitable treatment across all provincial 400-series highways. A copy of the resolution will be sent to various provincial officials, including the Premier of Ontario and local MPPs, as well as relevant associations in the trucking and farming sectors.
