Clarington Council Pursues Economic Support for Canadian Businesses
On March 3, 2025, the General Government Committee in Clarington convened to address trade disputes and explore economic opportunities. The committee deliberated on actions aimed at supporting Canadian businesses.
Members of the Clarington Council directed municipal staff to collaborate with counterparts from other municipalities to identify support strategies for Canadian enterprises. Furthermore, the council has formally requested that the Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada take legislative action to prioritize Canadian bidders and alleviate inter-provincial trade barriers.
Requests included a call for a review of the Discriminatory Business Practices Act, aiming to align policies with the support of Canadian supply chains. This aligns with broader objectives to enhance local economic resilience amidst ongoing trade challenges.
The council intends to monitor the provincial and federal responses, while continuing to explore methods to bolster the local economic environment for businesses.
