Clarington Council Discusses Municipal Accountability Act
During the meeting on January 13, 2025, the Clarington Council discussed the proposed Municipal Accountability Act. The Council supported recommendations from the Association of Municipal Managers, Clerks, and Treasurers of Ontario (AMCTO), which were submitted to the Ministry on July 14, 2021.
The Council recommended that the Act be implemented immediately upon passing, rather than waiting until the new council term in 2026. They emphasized that the Code of Conduct should ensure Councillors are accountable to policies approved by their local municipal Councils.
Additionally, the Council proposed that private communication devices should not be used for municipal business. They suggested that the Integrity Commissioner should have access to all relevant records during investigations. The Council also recommended including annual attendance records on Council agendas.
These proposals reflect the Council's approach to enhancing accountability and transparency in municipal governance.
