Clarington Council Discusses Anti-Racism Policy and Symbols of Hate

On May 10, 2021, the Clarington General Government Committee discussed the report titled "CSD-002-21 Symbols of Hate – Anti-Racism and Symbols of Hate." The committee passed a resolution that included several key actions. Firstly, Clarington Council recognized the psychological impact of symbols on community members and requested the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) to petition the Provincial Government for legislation that would allow municipalities to make enforceable decisions regarding symbols deemed unacceptable. The resolution also supported a motion from the Town of Collingwood for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) to advocate for clearer definitions of hate speech and symbols at the federal level, acknowledging the psychological harm caused by hateful symbols.

Additionally, the Diversity Advisory Committee was directed to prepare an anti-racism policy applicable to all staff, council members, and visitors to municipal facilities. This policy aims to clarify the municipality's expectations for tolerance and will be displayed at all facilities to inform users of the expectations and consequences for non-compliance. An official statement will be released by the Mayor and Council to provide context on these issues and to promote inclusivity within the community, emphasizing that racism and discrimination have no place in Clarington. The resolution was carried unanimously by the committee.
