Clarington Council Actions to Address Intimate Partner Violence

The Clarington Council has taken several measures to address Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as outlined in the General Government Committee meeting on February 5, 2024. The Council affirmed that IPV has reached epidemic proportions and resolved to advocate for improved transportation services for residents needing access to IPV-related support, particularly in areas where public transportation is inadequate. Additionally, the Council will continue to push for expanded cell service and high-speed internet throughout the community. Community safety outreach programs will also be promoted and supported across the Municipality.

The IDEA Officer has been directed to arrange training in 2024 for front-line staff who may encounter IPV situations and to incorporate a reference to IPV in Clarington’s 2024 Reconciliation Action Plan. Community Engagement Staff will promote public education campaigns to raise awareness about IPV, ensuring materials are available in multiple languages and formats. By the end of 2024, private confidential spaces will be created in libraries and community centers for victims to make calls to shelters, police, and victim services.

Furthermore, the Council plans to co-host age-appropriate community awareness programs addressing IPV in 2024 and 2025. A funding stream will be proposed as part of the 2025 budget within the Community Funding Program to support community safety programs, particularly in rural areas of Clarington. Information and resources regarding IPV will also be installed in recreation facility washrooms and on community message boards in 2024.
