Clarington Committee Re-evaluates Open Air Burn By-law

On October 7, 2024, the General Government Committee of Clarington met to discuss the Open Air Burn By-law. The committee decided to refer the by-law back to municipal staff for further review, with a report anticipated by the end of the year. This review will consider scenarios two and three from Report PUB-015-24, which propose allowing both urban and rural residents to conduct open air burns on their properties. Additional considerations include the size of fire pits, fire bans, and permitting requirements.

During the meeting, resident Brian Sweny voiced concerns about the by-law's restrictions. He highlighted that areas like Mitchells Corners, which are not urban, face challenges with large brush piles resulting from fallen trees, indicating a need for adjustments in the by-law to accommodate such situations.

The committee's decision initiates a process to address these concerns, with further details to be provided in the forthcoming report. Residents will be informed of updates and potential changes to the by-law as the review progresses.
