Clarington Approves Lease for Winter Warming Centre

The Clarington General Government Committee has approved a short-term lease of the former Tourism Office located at 181 Liberty Street South to The Regional Municipality of Durham. This location will serve as a Winter Warming Centre from November 2024 to April 2025. The lease agreement was passed with a recorded vote of 6 to 0, with Councillor Traill absent from the meeting.

The decision was made following a presentation by Sahar Foroutani, Area Manager of the Homeless System Team for the Region of Durham. Foroutani provided an overview of the winter warming centres and discussed the role of Durham Region in addressing homelessness. The presentation highlighted the challenges faced by Clarington, the benefits of the chosen location, and the lessons learned from the previous season.
