Charges Filed Against Driver for Operating Boat While Prohibited

A male has been charged after operating a boat while prohibited in Pickering.

On August 23, 2024, at approximately 8:05 p.m., members of the West Division responded to a water rescue call near Rouge Park Bay. A boat had lost power and was stranded near the shore. The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) Marine Unit located the boat and safely brought seven passengers and the driver to shore. During the identification check, officers discovered that the driver was a Criminal Code Canada-wide prohibited driver. The driver was taken into custody without incident.

Shanthakumar Kandiah, age 58 from Toronto, faces multiple charges including:

  • Operate a Conveyance While Prohibited
  • Operate Vessel Safety Equipment Not in Good Working Order
  • Operate Powered Pleasure Craft No Visual Signals on Board
  • Operate Pleasure Craft No Firefighting Equipment on Board.

Kandiah was released on an Undertaking.
