Changes to Alcohol Sales Regulations in Ontario to Impact Clarington

Ontario is expanding its alcohol beverage marketplace starting in August 2024. Existing grocery retailers that currently sell wine or beer will be able to sell new products such as coolers and other ready-to-drink beverages. By the end of October 2024, every eligible convenience, grocery, and big-box store in Ontario will be able to sell beer, cider, wine, and ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages if they choose to do so.

The government will work with the LCBO, the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), and The Beer Store, while consulting with industry partners and local beverage alcohol producers as it prepares to launch this new marketplace.

Local businesses in Clarington, including grocery stores, convenience stores, and alcohol retailers, are expected to be affected by these changes. The expanded product offerings may increase customer traffic and sales for these retailers. However, the impact on small, independent alcohol retailers remains to be seen as they may face increased competition from larger grocery and convenience stores.
