Celebrating 50 Years: Toronto Zoo and Durham Region

In 2024, both the Toronto Zoo and Durham Region will celebrate their 50th anniversaries. The Toronto Zoo, established in 1974, has become a significant attraction for families and wildlife enthusiasts. Similarly, Durham Region, which was formed in 1974, has developed into a vibrant community with various attractions and services. To commemorate these milestones, Durham Region Transit (DRT) will reintroduce the 917Z route, providing convenient transportation to the Toronto Zoo and Rouge National Urban Park. This route will operate on weekends and holidays from June 29, 2024, to September 2, 2024, with service every 30 minutes between 8:30 a.m. and 8 p.m. The 917Z will connect key locations including the Oshawa Centre Terminal, Whitby Station, Ajax Station, and Pickering Parkway Terminal, facilitating access for residents to participate in the anniversary celebrations at both the Zoo and the Region.
