Cannington Implements Area-Wide 40 km/h Speed Limit

In support of Durham Vision Zero, the Regional Municipality of Durham and the Township of Brock will implement a 40 kilometre per hour (km/h) speed limit in Cannington.

Location:

  • Cameron Street (Regional Road 12) from 260 metres west of Albert Street to 300 metres east of McRae Street in Cannington.
  • Local roads within the Township of Brock will also be subject to the new speed limit.

Installation Date:

  • Speed limit reduction signs are expected to be installed on September 11, 2024. Installation may be affected by weather conditions.

Purpose:

  • The speed limit reduction aims to enhance safety for all road users.
  • Aggressive driving, including speeding, is identified as a key issue in Durham’s Vision Zero Strategic Road Safety Action Plan, which seeks to reduce fatalities and injuries from road collisions.
  • Speed contributes to approximately one-third of fatal collisions in Canada, and reducing speed is considered an effective measure to decrease collision frequency and severity.

Community Safety Zones:

  • All Regional roads designated with a 40 km/h speed limit will also be marked as community safety zones, allowing for automated speed enforcement (ASE).
  • The ASE program captures images of vehicles exceeding the speed limit, with notices of offence sent to the vehicle's registered owner if warranted. No demerit points are issued for these offences.
