Canadian Naval Ships Return from Baltic Sea Deployment

His Majesty’s Canadian Ships (HMCS) Glace Bay and Shawinigan have returned to Halifax, Nova Scotia, following a four-month deployment in the Baltic Sea. The deployment was part of Operation REASSURANCE, Canada's contribution to NATO's deterrence and defense measures.

During their mission, the ships participated in training exercises with the Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1). This included collaboration with naval forces from Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The operation aimed to enhance maritime security and involved monitoring activities, such as tracking a Russian submarine and surface vessel from August 29 to September 1, 2024.

The deployment highlighted Canada's commitment to international security and allowed the Royal Canadian Navy to engage in various exercises and operations with allied nations. Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic, noted the professionalism of the crews and their role in maintaining maritime security in the Baltic and North Seas.

HMCS Glace Bay and Shawinigan departed Halifax on July 13, 2024, and their return marks the completion of their mission under Operation REASSURANCE. Meanwhile, HMCS Charlottetown continues its deployment as the flagship for Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 in the Mediterranean, supporting regional maritime security.
