Canadian Ministers Address Potential U.S. Tariffs

On November 25, 2024, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, along with Minister of Public Safety Dominic LeBlanc, issued a statement regarding potential U.S. tariffs. The statement emphasized the strong trade and security relationship between Canada and the United States. It highlighted that Canada is a significant buyer of U.S. goods, purchasing more from the U.S. than several major economies combined. Additionally, Canada is a crucial supplier of crude oil to the U.S., accounting for 60% of U.S. crude oil imports last year.

The statement also noted the collaboration between Canadian and U.S. law enforcement agencies in combating the trafficking of fentanyl and other opioids. The Canadian Border Services Agency is enhancing its capabilities to detect opioids at ports of entry. The ministers affirmed their commitment to continue discussions with the incoming U.S. administration on these issues.
