Canada's Winter Weather Outlook for 2024-2025 Released

Environment and Climate Change Canada has released its winter outlook for the 2024-2025 season. The forecast indicates that temperatures in the north and east of Canada are expected to be close to or above normal, while the west may experience a warm start followed by normal to below normal temperatures. This pattern is influenced by a La Niña event, which typically brings cooler sea temperatures in the Pacific and can lead to below-seasonal temperatures and increased snowfall in certain regions.

The La Niña effect is expected to be weaker this year due to ongoing climate change, which is causing Canada to warm at approximately twice the global rate. This warming trend is leading to more frequent and intense weather events. The government plans to utilize a new system to analyze the impact of human-caused climate change on extreme weather events, starting with cold temperatures this winter and expanding to precipitation in 2025.

The government emphasizes the importance of understanding and adapting to climate change risks. A National Adaptation Strategy has been developed to address these challenges, aiming to reduce disaster risks, improve health outcomes, protect biodiversity, and support economic resilience.
