Canada's Employment Sees Modest Growth in September 2024
In September 2024, Canada's employment increased by 47,000, marking a 0.2% rise. The unemployment rate decreased slightly by 0.1 percentage points to 6.5%. Employment gains were noted among youth aged 15 to 24, with an increase of 33,000 jobs, and among women aged 25 to 54, with an increase of 21,000 jobs.
The information, culture, and recreation industry saw an employment rise of 22,000 jobs, while wholesale and retail trade, and professional, scientific, and technical services each added 22,000 and 21,000 jobs, respectively.
Regionally, Ontario and Quebec experienced employment growth, with Ontario adding 43,000 jobs and Quebec 22,000. In contrast, British Columbia and New Brunswick saw declines in employment.
Average hourly wages increased by 4.6% compared to the previous year, reaching $35.59. Total hours worked decreased by 0.4% in September but were up 1.2% compared to a year earlier.
