Canada's 2023 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reach 27-Year Low

The Government of Canada has provided an early summary of the country's greenhouse gas emissions estimates for 2023. According to the data, emissions have decreased to 694 megatonnes, a reduction of 6 megatonnes from the previous year. This marks the lowest level of emissions in 27 years, excluding the pandemic years, as reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The report also indicates a decrease in the emission intensity of Canada's economy, which has fallen by 34% since 2005. This reduction is largely attributed to changes in energy production methods, including a significant decrease in emissions from electricity generation. Specifically, emissions from electricity have decreased by 67 megatonnes, primarily due to the phase-out of coal-fired electricity generation.

These findings are part of an early release from the National Inventory Report, which is typically published in full in the spring. The early release aims to provide timely information on Canada's progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and to inform policy decisions.

The data reflects ongoing efforts to address climate change at a national level, with a focus on reducing emissions and transitioning to cleaner energy sources. The Government of Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada continue to monitor and report on these trends as part of their commitment to transparency and accountability in environmental stewardship.
