Canada Expels Indian Diplomats Amid Investigation

Global Affairs Canada has announced the expulsion of six Indian diplomats and consular officials from Canada. This action is linked to an investigation into alleged criminal activities involving agents associated with the Government of India. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have identified connections between these activities and the Indian government.

The expulsion notices were issued after India declined to waive diplomatic and consular immunities, which would have allowed the RCMP to interview the individuals involved. Following the expulsion notice, India decided to withdraw its officials.

This development occurs amidst ongoing diplomatic relations between Canada and India, which have spanned over 75 years. Despite the current tensions, Canada continues to engage in dialogue with India through its High Commission in Delhi.

The case in question involves the killing of Canadian citizen and Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. In May 2024, the RCMP arrested four individuals in connection with this incident. The Canadian government has emphasized the importance of cooperation from the Indian government to advance the investigation.
