Canada Expands Prohibited Firearms List and Plans New Gun Regulations
The Government of Canada has announced an expansion of the list of prohibited assault-style firearms, effective December 5, 2024. This measure includes an amnesty order, valid until October 30, 2025, to allow businesses and owners to comply with the new regulations. The amnesty also provides temporary exceptions for Indigenous peoples exercising rights under section 35 of the Constitution Act and for those using firearms for sustenance hunting.
The amendments to the Classification Regulations have led to the prohibition of 104 families of firearms, covering 324 unique makes and models. Despite these changes, over 19,000 non-restricted makes and models remain available for hunting and sport shooting in Canada.
The government plans to introduce further regulatory amendments in Parliament on December 13, 2024. These amendments aim to ensure all firearms are accounted for before entering the Canadian market. Additionally, the government intends to implement remaining provisions of former Bill C-21 by January 2025, focusing on reducing gun violence related to gender-based and intimate partner violence. New regulations concerning large-capacity magazines are expected by March 2025.
The government has also initiated the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program to provide compensation to affected businesses and owners. The program's first phase has begun with select businesses and will soon be available to all firearms businesses across Canada.
