Canada Announces New Immigration Targets for 2025-2027

The Government of Canada has announced a new immigration plan for 2025-2027, which aims to control population growth by setting specific targets for both temporary and permanent residents. This plan, presented by Marc Miller, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, is designed to manage population growth sustainably over the long term.

Key elements of the plan include:

  • Permanent Residents: The target for permanent residents will decrease from 500,000 to 395,000 in 2025, further reducing to 380,000 in 2026, and setting a target of 365,000 by 2027.
  • Temporary Residents: The plan introduces controlled targets for international students and foreign workers, aiming to reduce temporary resident volumes to 5% of Canada's population by 2026.

The plan also addresses pressures on housing, infrastructure, and social services, intending to align with Canada's economic and social prosperity goals. The government claims these measures will support economic growth and improve housing affordability by decreasing the housing supply gap by approximately 670,000 units by the end of 2027.
