On August 26, 2024, the Department of Finance Canada announced measures to address what they have termed unfair trade practices by China. The measures include a 100% surtax on Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) starting October 1, 2024, and a 25% surtax on imports of steel and aluminum products from China effective October 15, 2024. The government will also limit eligibility for certain zero-emission vehicle incentives to products made in countries with free trade agreements with Canada. A 30-day consultation will be launched to consider measures for other critical sectors, including batteries, semiconductors, solar products, and critical minerals. These actions will be reviewed within a year and may be extended or supplemented as needed.
