Canada Announces $2 Billion AI Compute Strategy

The Government of Canada has announced a new strategy to enhance the country's artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities through significant financial commitments. The Canadian Sovereign AI Compute Strategy, launched by the Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, François-Philippe Champagne, aims to allocate up to $2 billion to improve AI infrastructure across the nation.

The strategy outlines three primary objectives:

  • Up to $700 million will be directed towards expanding data centers as part of the AI Compute Challenge.

  • Up to $1 billion is earmarked for the development of public computing infrastructure.

  • Up to $300 million will be used to provide affordable compute power access to small and medium-sized enterprises through the AI Compute Access Fund.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure Canadian businesses and researchers have the necessary resources to develop AI technologies domestically. The government emphasizes that this strategy will help maintain Canada's competitive edge in AI research and development.

Public consultations for the strategy took place over the summer of 2024, gathering input from over 1,000 stakeholders. The government is also supporting AI development through other measures, including the Canadian Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute and the Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (Bill C-27).
