Canada Allocates $13.6 Million for Small Modular Reactor Projects
The Government of Canada has announced a financial commitment of $13.6 million towards research and development projects focused on small modular reactors (SMRs). This funding is part of Natural Resources Canada's Enabling Small Modular Reactors Program. The announcement was made by Julie Dabrusin, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, on behalf of Minister Jonathan Wilkinson.
The investment will support nine projects across Canada aimed at advancing the commercial development of SMRs. These projects include:
- $935,542 to Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, for studying fuel dry storage and conducting a techno-gap/life-cycle assessment.
- $2,131,000 to Chemetics in Pickering, Ontario, for developing SMR fabrication technologies.
- $2,750,000 to Prodigy Clean Energy Ltd in Montreal, Quebec, for research on transportable nuclear power plants.
- $3,750,000 to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization in Toronto, Ontario, for enhancing waste management compatibility with SMRs.
- $261,535 to Calian Ltd in Ottawa, Ontario, for creating guidance documents for SMR construction.
- $543,000 to the Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries in Pickering, Ontario, for a National Ready4SMR program.
- $126,475 to Kinectrics in Etobicoke, Ontario, for investigating carbon-14 disposal from radioactive waste.
- $2,070,336 to North Shore Mi'kmaq Tribal Council in Eel Ground, New Brunswick, for developing SMR supply chains.
- $1,094,850 to Opportunities New Brunswick in Fredericton, New Brunswick, for a framework for SMR technology manufacturing.
This initiative is part of Canada's broader strategy to transition to a low-carbon economy by investing in clean energy technologies.
