The Durham Region Health Department has issued a blue-green algae advisory for Kinsmen Beach in Palmer Park, near Platten Island. Residents are advised to avoid swimming or playing in areas where the water is discoloured or where foam, scum, or mats of algae are present. Additionally, consuming fish from these areas is not recommended.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins that are harmful to both humans and pets. Exposure to these toxins can cause skin irritation, respiratory issues, and other health problems.

Pets that come into contact with or ingest the contaminated water may also experience serious health effects.

The Health Department is conducting regular water tests throughout the summer to monitor the safety of local beaches. Water samples are tested by the Public Health Ontario Laboratory in Peterborough, and results are shared weekly to inform the public about beach conditions. Residents can access real-time inspection results for local beaches through the Health Department’s online disclosure portal, Check&Go! Durham.
