Beaverton Heights Transitional Housing Opens in Beaverton

The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced the opening of Beaverton Heights, a transitional housing facility located at 121 Nine Mile Road, Beaverton. This facility comprises 47 units and offers accommodation along with access to various support services. The housing is designed to assist North Durham residents who are experiencing or at risk of homelessness, providing them with priority access to the program.

Beaverton Heights includes a community hub, outdoor garden areas, and recreational facilities. The service operator, Blue Door, offers wraparound services such as on-site meals, life skills building, and connections to health services. These services aim to help residents transition into permanent housing by overcoming barriers to housing stability.

The facility is gradually welcoming program participants, with the goal of supporting them towards achieving permanent housing and stability. The design of Beaverton Heights has been recognized with national and international awards, including the 2021 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence. The residence is also designed to operate on solar energy and electric power, aligning with the region's sustainability goals.

John Henry, Regional Chair and CEO of the Region of Durham, stated that Beaverton Heights aims to be a vital resource for the community, assisting residents on their journey to permanent housing. Stella Danos-Papaconstantinou, Commissioner of Social Services, expressed anticipation for the success stories that will emerge from the residence.
