Battery Recycling Initiative in Durham Region: October 7-11

The Regional Municipality of Durham has announced a battery recycling initiative for residents. Used household batteries can be placed out for recycling on Green Bin collection days during the week of October 7 to 11. This program is available to households across Durham Region that receive curbside collection services.

Key Details:

  • When: October 7 to 11, coinciding with Green Bin collection days.
  • Where: Households in Durham Region with curbside collection.
  • Instructions: Residents should place used batteries in a clear, sealable plastic bag and put the bag on top of their closed Green Bin for collection.

It is noted that batteries are no longer collected with the blue box due to a transition to a producer responsibility organization. Residents are advised to store batteries in a cool, dry location away from flammable materials and to cover terminals with masking tape before storage.

If residents miss the collection date, they can drop off batteries at any of the Region’s Waste Management Facilities year-round at no charge. More information about battery recycling can be found on the Durham Region website.
