Analysis of the Physician Recruitment Incentive Program

The Municipality of Clarington has approved a Physician Recruitment Incentive Program aimed at addressing the shortage of healthcare providers in the community. The program will provide up to $25,000 per doctor, contingent upon matching contributions from local medical offices. This initiative is modeled after a successful pilot program in the Town of Whitby. Additionally, the municipality has allocated $250,000 from the Economic Development Reserve Fund to support the recruitment of up to ten doctors. The remaining funds from the approved $100,000 budget for physician recruitment will also be utilized to fulfill obligations under the regional recruitment program with the Region of Durham. The expected benefits of this program include improved access to healthcare services for residents and enhanced community health outcomes, as stated in the General Government Committee meeting on June 3, 2024 .
