Amendment to Traffic and Parking Bylaw for Speed Limit Reduction in School Zones

On April 8, 2024, the General Government Committee approved an amendment to the Traffic and Parking Bylaw aimed at reducing speed limits in school zones. The resolution, moved by Councillor Anderson and seconded by Councillor Elhajjeh, included the allocation of up to $70,000 from the Municipal Capital Works Reserve Fund for additional signage required for this initiative. Furthermore, the committee directed staff to engage with Durham Region to request alignment with Clarington's criteria for speed limits in school zones and to seek comments and support from School Board Trustees. Additionally, staff were instructed to request the Ministry of Transportation to reduce speeds on Highway 35/115 in the vicinity of Clarke High School. The main motion as amended was carried unanimously.
